These two clips belong to a segment titled 'Pivotal Moments'. Clip two follows immediately after clip one, so they are best watched together. There are more clips on youtube and on my website.

Thank you for your orders, all of which will be with you before the 20th of December. The shop will close on the 18th of December and reopen on the 10th of January 2020. Sincere thanks for your support and your purchases. I used to be skeptical about the price of art and until I received a beautiful print as a leaving present from work colleagues. I suddenly realised that this was a once in a lifetime object, something that would be handed down in my family for generations. I started to see the value of art as potential inheritance and as an embodiment of what one values during their lifetime. Since then, my attitude to selling art has changed drastically. I do not mean to imply that my work will live forever. I realise how conceited and improbable that sounds. It really is not about that, but I no longer feel guilty about selling or for making a living out of my work. I am making objects which I hope will have a life beyond mine.  A work of art may just carry a message fo...

'Unwritten' A Banner for New Walk Museum's Santuary Wall.

Image
A Banner for New Walk Museum's Sanctuary Wall.  Two versions of the banner painting prior to its printing. I was very proud to complete and deliver this hugely enjoyable commission for Leicester New Walk Museum today. In the photograph, you can see the display in progress and Linda Harding who is the Community Engagement coordinator. She has worked tirelessly to make hundreds of Sanctuary Birds, with many volunteer groups. As the men and women travel through the arduous journey, their fate is yet undetermined. It is not yet written, although the belief in many cultural contexts is that our fate and future is predetermined. That concept is embodied in the word ‘Kismet’. In the piece, I also allude to tw...

Sanctuary 30 The Museum Banner Commission. Making date November 2019. Exhibition date: December 2019-January 2020, New Walk Museum, Leicester.

The Open 30 Banner and installation. A work in development by George Sfougaras, in partnership with Linda Harding and Refugee, Asylum seeker and community volunteers. Images created by Community Volunteers. I have been working on three images showing people seeking safety. As most refugee and asylum seekers often travel by sea in treacherous conditions, I have used three such representations and I provide an explanation with each one, and how it may be combined with the Birds of Freedom that Linda Harding has been making with various community groups and volunteers. Proposal 1 The version of the above image is derived from the painting entitled ‘Unwritten’. As the men and women travel through the arduous journey, their fate is yet undetermined. It is not yet written, although the belief in many cultural contexts is that our fate and future is predetermined. This idea is embodied in the word ‘Kismet’. The word kismet c...
