BEARING WITNESS

Image
CONTINUING WITH THE THEME OF OBJECTS ON THE PAINTING SURFACE. I have been painting  and printing a lot of hopeful pictures of my 'Little Trees' series and in the middle of that work, I felt a strong need to create something different. I was moved by events around the world and wanted a way to process them. I wanted a sober and meaningful narrative, so I opted for four strongly lit faces, monumentally set in a funerary remembrance setting.  The result startled me.  It was a risk, as this was not an easy painting to complete emotionally, or technically. I decided to leave it in black and white, as it basically achieved what I needed it to do...but the thing that surprised me is that I now feel that I have a whole series of works like this inside of me, exploring the narrative and the light, both in the painting technique using dramatic lighting, but also in terms of the way the little cubes interact with the image. TELEMACHUS

Image
Telemachus' name in  Greek  means "far from battle", perhaps reflecting his absence from the  Trojan War . Homer also calls Telemachus by the patronymic epithet "Odysseus' son".  This series explores quotes from the text of Telemachus from 'The Adventures of Telemachus'  by Francois Fenelon written in French in 1696. Here, I am working paradoxically from a Greek translation of the text, by Niko Panzari. There is no date I can find in the book, but I believe it was published in 1962-64.  A later translation was also published in 1998.  Other works by Fenelon  include: Traité de l'éducation des filles  (Πραγματεία περί της εκπαιδεύσεως των νεανίδων 1687) Explication des maximes des saints sur la vie intérieure  (Εξήγηση των ρήσεων των Αγίων επί του εσωτερικού βίου 1697) Les Aventures de Télémaque  (Οι περιπέτειες του Τηλέμαχου, 1699) Dialogues des Morts et Fables, écrits composés pour l'éducation du duc de Bourgogne  (...

THE LITTLE TREES; DRAWINGS, PRINTS AND GRAPHIC WORK.

Image
The little trees are a quieter expression of our times. Transplantation, displacement, feelings expressed in allegory and in symbols. Our times are not easy.We are vulnerable to forces that we cannot control, understand or effectively address. Humanity seems to be split into alternate realities. The little trees bear witness to all this. They are a wise, quiet presence.  They bear witness.
