An Open Letter to Those in Power: The Moral Imperative of AI

AI, Power, and the Moral Choice Before Us To those who shape policy, steer economies, and hold the levers of influence, Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant concept; it is already at work, quietly reshaping society. And yet, its trajectory is being dictated not by ethics or wisdom, but by short-term profit, surveillance, and unchecked competition. At present, AI is being developed to optimise efficiency, predict behaviour, and maximise engagement — but not to protect, nurture, or enable human care. This is a failure of responsibility. It should reinforce the very values upon which civilisations are built — kindness, wisdom, and the protection of the vulnerable. Without a shift in priorities, AI will: Deepen division, amplifying misinformation, eroding trust, and driving people further into isolated e...

Towards the creation of an AI that prioritizes kindness, protection, and support for human connection over short-term gains.

Towards the creation of an AI that prioritizes kindness, protection, and support for human connection over short-term gains.  If AI were built with a core function of nurturing love, care, and ethical responsibility, it could genuinely enhance humanity rather than just optimize for profit or power. How Could We Achieve This? 1. Embedding Ethical Foundations in AI Development Shift the focus from profit-driven AI (which optimizes for engagement, efficiency, and control) to ethically-driven AI that prioritizes human well-being and collective care. Create AI regulatory frameworks that demand ethical considerations in AI deployment, much like medical ethics safeguard human life. Develop "compassion metrics"—AI shouldn’t just maximize profit, but also measure and encourage social good, well-being, and meaningful connection. 2. Aligning AI with Human Flourishing Teach AI to prioritize long-term well-being over short-term gain—design AI that discourages exploitation, misinformation,...

Presentation for Holocaust day at Leicester Museum, January 2020. Introduction When I drew the version of the Knight Death and Satan or the Devil in 2018, I had a ‘sort of’ clear view of European history. History seemed by definition ‘finished business’ incidents and outcomes, preserved in one form or another from one ‘truthful’ perspective or another. I threw myself into it with enthusiasm and admiration for something that was so beautiful and yet so repugnant in its original form. It encapsulate...
