An Open Letter to Those in Power: The Moral Imperative of AI

AI, Power, and the Moral Choice Before Us

To those who shape policy, steer economies, and hold the levers of influence,

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant concept; it is already at work, quietly reshaping society. And yet, its trajectory is being dictated not by ethics or wisdom, but by short-term profit, surveillance, and unchecked competition.

At present, AI is being developed to optimise efficiency, predict behaviour, and maximise engagement — but not to protect, nurture, or enable human care. This is a failure of responsibility.

AI should not be merely another tool for economic expansion or state control. It must be guided by a more fundamental principle: to enable human beings to care for one another. It should reinforce the very values upon which civilisations are built — kindness, wisdom, and the protection of the vulnerable.

Without a shift in priorities, AI will:

  • Deepen division, amplifying misinformation, eroding trust, and driving people further into isolated echo chambers.

  • Devalue human labour, accelerating economic disparity while offering no meaningful reintegration for those left behind.

  • Strengthen mechanisms of control, turning institutions into systems that monitor, manipulate, and extract rather than empower.

The question is not whether AI should be regulated, but whether those in power will act before the damage becomes irreversible. What is needed is not simply oversight, but a redefinition of AI’s role in society.

AI should safeguard human connection and compassion, rather than increase isolation or digital dependency.
It should enhance collective wisdom, not override human judgement. It should reinforce deliberation, not automate decision-making.
It must be constrained by ethical guardrails that prevent its exploitation — ensuring that it serves people before power, and humanity before efficiency.

We have seen what happens when technology outpaces ethical responsibility. The integrity of governance, the resilience of institutions, and the dignity of human life depend on the choices made now.

AI is not simply a technical challenge; it is a test of moral leadership. Will those in power act with the foresight that history demands, or will they wait until correction is no longer an option?

The future of AI is not about what is possible, but about what is right.
It must be defined before it defines us.
